GREENLAND REVISITED: TRAINING IN HAUGASTØL & KITING PREPARATION

// Timeframe: May-June 2019; 30 to 45 days
// Objective: Full South-North Crossing of Greenland
// Distance: 2300 km
// From Narsarsuaq to Qaanaag passing by DYE2.
An Antarctic crossing takes 4 years of training and preparation, and for Patrick this includes two preparatory expeditions: Greenland kite route from Illulissat to Quaanaq completed in 2018 and the Greenland crossing from Narsarsuaq to Qaanaaq completed in May 2019, guided by Carl Alvey.
With the ultimate goal of completing an Antarctic crossing in 2022, maintaining physical training is crucial. Patrick regularly trains to keep his physical health in check and has been to Haugastøl for snow-kite sessions with Carl Alvey.
GREENLAND TRAVERSE – COMPLETED
After starting the expedition on 12 May 2019 Patrick Peters and the rest of the team travelled 2300km in 30 days to reach their exit point on 11 June 2019. Their longest day involved covering a distance of 220km.
PHYSICAL TRAINING
Preparing for a polar expedition isn’t just about getting the right gear together. Consistent care-taking of physical health is also of the utmost importance and to prepare for Greenland 2019, this came in the form of regular personal training session with a personal trainer and a sports science professional.

HAUGASTOL TRAINING
A week in Haugastol, Norway, with Carl Alvey to fine-tune those snow-kiting skills. Carl guided Patrick’s Greenland 2019 expedition.
